A day in the life of a Mauritian

Located in the western Indian Ocean, between Reunion Island in the west and Rodrigues Island in the east, is Mauritius. The main island of the Republic of Mauritius is known for its heavenly beaches and crystal clear waters where palm trees and relaxation reign. Its tropical climate makes travellers dreams come true when they realise the perfection of the beaches and local cuisine.
For your next trip to Mauritius as a couple or as a family, we recommend that you embrace the culture and live like the locals, embark with Villanovo for a day in the shoes of a Mauritian!

A morning in Mauritius

A morning in Mauritius

Before the emergence of bread, the typical breakfast consisted of faratas with jam and a large cup of tea, a heritage of British colonialism. Faratas Paratha is a fusion of the words parat and atta, which literally means layers of cooked dough. All of this is served in large quantities for a hearty breakfast.

To get around Mauritius by car, you drive on the left! A bus network is also available all around the island if you want to discover it from top to bottom. After breakfast, head to the Goodlands market. Out of all of the markets on the island, it is the least touristy and offers authentic local products.

The Saint Louis market is also a landmark of the island frequented by locals in order to obtain fruit and vegetables.
For your purchases, the local currency is the rupee, which replaced the Mauritian dollar in 1877. At the time of writing 1 GBP is equivalent to 47 Mauritian rupees. At lunchtime, why not stay at the markets and enjoy Mauritian street food?

After a traditional meal, head for the Grapefruit district and specifically the grapefruit garden for a walk in a pleasant setting, in contact with a green, clean and respected environment. It is in 1170 that Pierre Poivre cultivated this garden by importing all kinds of biodiversity, paths between nutmeg and cloves, laurels, trees and spices from the West Indies. In the early evening, there is the opportunity to taste the local beer: the Phoenix, made since the early 1960s, the recipe was invented by Mauritians. The Phoenix brewery can be visited - there you can trace the chronological process of beer production.

At dinner, find a restaurant with a sublime view to end the day in style. The restaurant Le Pescatore, recognised as one of the best on the island, offers you the opportunity to be transported by the island's flavours. Let yourself be guided by an experienced and passionate local chef who combines the elements to perfection to serve you a tasty plate that perfectly reflects Mauritius. Enjoy local flavours in an ideal setting with a superb view of the sea.
