Attend the next Chinatown Food and Cultural Festival

Cultural diversity, picture-perfect landscapes and delicious gastronomy is the very essence of Mauritius and the perfect place for a holiday that will satisfy all tastes. If you have planned a trip with family or friends, many discoveries await you beyond your moments of absolute relaxation by your private swimming pool. Today we discover the Chinese part of Mauritius, the island's Chinatown district which hosts the famous Chinatown Food and Cultural Festival every year, a colourful two-day festival that will bring a festive atmosphere to your stay!

A date you can't miss!

A date you can't miss!

For sixteen years now, the famous small district of Chinatown in Port Louis has been hosting its annual culinary and cultural festival, notably set up by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce. It is a much-awaited event in Mauritius as the festival's liveliness radiates out over the island. It is organised at the end of April or early May depending on the year, and over the course of a weekend, the Chinatown district is transformed to the rhythm of Asian music and is entirely adorned with red and yellow lanterns to give a festive look to the streets of the district. During this festival, the whole culture is celebrated and many inspirations can be found in the Mauritian culture thanks to the common history of these two communities.

Like so many events this spring, the sixteenth edition of this festival has been cancelled for health reasons. However, as mentioned in one of our previous articles, although the current situation condemns us to remain stuck at home, this is the perfect time to prepare your next trip and gather all the necessary information that will help you in your decision making. So if you have been dreaming of a trip to Mauritius for a long time, you will see in this magnificent festival, an event not to be missed next year and a choice activity for your stay.

The programme of the festival is every year more complete, offering a range of unique activities centred around the discovery of Chinese culture. Traditional meals, acrobatics, dances, exhibitions, as well as contests, everything is gathered to entertain tourists and Mauritians for a weekend. Indeed, many artists come to perform, but also renowned chefs make the trip to China every year and offer delicious specialities according to the theme assigned to the edition.

The launch of the festival is usually marked by a conference at the headquarters of ABC motors, the main sponsor of the event, followed by a gala. All the streets of Chinatown become pedestrian to welcome the many visitors to the festival, the festival area has recently been expanded and now offers a children's area with many activities dedicated to them. The Chinatown Food and Cultural Festival is, therefore, a must-see event that will fill your eyes (and taste buds) during your trip to the island!
