Don't miss the markets of Mauritius

Port Louis Market

The Port Louis market has the most beautiful fruit and vegetable stalls on the island, making it the emblematic market in Mauritius. It is the perfect place if you wish to discover Mauritian gastronomy and do your shopping. Indeed, if you book a villa with a private chef or if you wish to learn how to make local dishes, the Port Louis market,  will provide you with all the necessary ingredients. You will be captivated by the colours of the stalls as far as the eye can see and enjoy the smell of fresh fruit in the air. You will also have the opportunity to taste specialities such as aloudas or fruit directly from the market. However, this is a market with a lot of tourists compared to the Goodlands market below, which is more local and also offers food products.

Quatre Bornes market

Further away from the tourist life, the Quatre Bornes market will allow you to find all kinds of souvenirs from your trip. Similar to a megastore, all the typical products of Mauritius, such as traditional clothes, bags, jewellery or baskets made by craftsmen are sold there. This is the place to go if you want to leave with Mauritian handicrafts.  There are also decorative items such as carpets or kitchen items used in the preparation of local dishes. You will only find a few food stalls in case you get hungry during your shopping, but this is a market with very few food products.

Goodlands Market

Located a few kilometres from Grand Gaube, this is the unmissable market if you want to discover the habits of the island's residents and mingle with the locals. Indeed, this is where the locals come to do their shopping and the Goodlands market is probably the least known to tourists, thanks to its almost exclusively local attendance. People come here more for the sensory experience it offers, rather than to find souvenirs. It is a food market where you will find fruits and vegetables, fish, meat and many spices. As in the Port Louis market but without the abundance of tourists, you will be able to taste typical products of the island.

The market of Curepipe

A little over 20 kilometres from Port Louis, the town of Curepipe is the second largest town on the island and is located in the district of Plaine Wilhems. Curepipe offers a century-old covered market whose visit is not to be missed. The market is held in the arcades of the town in a huge stone building where you can take beautiful pictures. You will discover in this market, open every day, restaurants, bars and tea rooms both atypical and trendy, and well known by the residents.
