We set out to discover its most beautiful Hindu temples in the four corners of the island whose colours will amaze you. Hinduism being the most represented religion on the island after Catholicism and Islam, there are many temples in homage to Hindu deities for unique excursions. Whether it is the largest temples that we are going to present to you or the most modest ones that you will find on a walk in the small villages like the Indian temple of Grand-Gaube or the Temple Malheureux, these discoveries guarantee an unforgettable trip.

The Temple of the Sacred Lake of Grand Bassin

Located in the heart of a mountainous region in the centre of the island, Grand Bassin is the place of worship for the Hindu religion in Mauritius. In fact, many people come here to worship and it is the place of pilgrimage especially during the night of Shiva which takes place every year and during which the faithful walk 3 days and 3 consecutive nights in homage to this divinity. One can admire magnificent statues on the site of Grand Bassin including the largest statue of the Hindu goddess Darga inaugurated in 2018. The temple of the site is among the most important in the country and is characterized by its dominant green and pink colors that are reflected in the sacred lake water. 
 

Goodlands Temple 

This absolutely magnificent temple in the north of the island is one of our favourites on the island. There are many brightly colored columns that blend in with the statues of the deities. It is one of the largest temples on the island for its height. Its interior, which you can visit as long as you take off your shoes, is just as worth the detour. The visit of this temple will also be the opportunity to listen to the chants of the priests for an exceptional moment.
 

The temple of Mahébourg 

Newer than the rest of our selection of temples, the Mahébourg temple is located in the south-east of Mauritius and it has it’s own particularities. Built in a sumptuous mix of colours, its visit plunges us directly into a sacred aura where several religious rituals take place within the temple. Depending on the date of your visit you may have the chance to attend the exceptional events that are organized there such as a walk on swords or fire, an unforgettable spectacle guaranteed!

The Temple of Amma Tookay 

Located in the south of the island and more precisely in Cape Devil in the center, you will discover a superb site where the main temple for the goddess Durga, mother of the universe, is surrounded by several other small colorful temples. These different small temples are dedicated to each of the deities like Shiva, Muruga or Danesh. The site would have been born in the 19th century following the discovery of a magic stone in the middle of the fields, which was impossible to remove from the ground. Judging this stone to be special and spiritual, the main temple was built on it. We also advise you to visit the site from the inside for its special atmosphere, where you will surely meet the faithful making offerings, but also for the beauty of its multicoloured architecture.
 

The Maheswarnath temple in Triolet  

This temple in the northwest of Mauritius is the largest Hindu temple on the island. Created at the end of the 19th century, it is also composed of a group of several temples of different sizes in perfect harmony with each other. The mixture of the different colours of the temples is once again captivating and promises you magnificent souvenir photos. You will be invited to penetrate into the heart of the great temple where the smell of incense diffuses in the air and brings a serene and religious atmosphere to the place, providing you with a unique spiritual experience within everyone's reach.
