3 reasons to spend Christmas in Mauritius

Are you dreaming of escaping? Pack your sunscreen and swimsuits and head to Mauritius, an island in the heart of the Mascarene archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Escape from the European cold wave by settling under the coconut trees on a fine sandy beach. Due to its rich cultural diversity, influenced by French, Indian, Chinese, Creole and African origins, Mauritius is home to an abundance of dance evening festivals for unforgettable end-of-year celebrations.

The delightful climate

The delightful climate

The seasons in Mauritius are reversed with those in Europe, which means when it is cold and rainy here, the weather there is optimal. From November to March, temperatures vary between 26° and 30° on average, but are rarely unbearable, due to the heavenly lagoon that surrounds the island, where you can have a refreshing swim, in turquoise water, usually at 26°, and filled with magnificent multicoloured fish, corals, and other impressive aquatic creatures.

Activities for all tastes

Activities for all tastes

For diving enthusiasts, or even for those who would like to develop a taste for it, you will not be disappointed by the conditions offered by Mauritius. In addition to its sensational aquatic fauna and flora and the ideal water temperature, in December you will have the opportunity to meet migrating mammals such as whales that can be seen in the south of the island. Villanovo recommends diving at Grand Baie because it is protected from easterly winds and currents in the water that can disturb beginners.

For those who would like to completely sail away, why not rent a catamaran, with a skipper, with family or friends, and go admire the breathtaking acrobatic jumps of the dolphins?  December being the ideal time to observe them, explore Tamarin Bay, in the southwest of the island, which is their home.

Enchanting beaches

Enchanting beaches

As the famous American writer Mark Twain once said, Mauritius was first created, then paradise, an expression that says a lot about the splendour of the island, whose beaches are among the most beautiful in the world. To immerse yourself in Mauritian authenticity, we recommend the beach of Flic-en-Flac, where you can enjoy freshly cut coconuts while admiring the colourful spectacle that the sunset offers. It is essential to take a walk on the beach of Le Morne, on the south coast, where the panorama of the mountain of Le Morne, classified as a UNESCO world heritage site, is exceptional. For a more wild atmosphere, discover the north coast, more precisely the beach of Mont Choisy, which has a long forest of Filaos where you can take a nap sheltered from the sun. Finally, for total serenity, Villanovo recommends the beach of Belle-Mare, on the east coast, which is the most windy but also the quietest.
